Building a data platform with open source: A $1M+ cost-saving journey - Amaresh Bingumalla
Platform Engineering
Peloton’s data platform engineering team achieved significant cost savings and performance improvements by transitioning from legacy, snapshot-dependent architectures to custom, open-source solutions. By implementing Change Data Capture (CDC) with Apache Hudi on AWS S3, the team eliminated tight coupling between online and analytical systems, enabling near real-time data access and efficient time-travel queries. Furthermore, replacing third-party SaaS vendors with a unified log management platform using Vector and OpenSearch, alongside a custom customer data platform for event tracking, reduced operational costs by 50%. These initiatives provided complete data ownership, increased scalability, and allowed for configuration-based management of event streams and logs. This shift away from expensive third-party dependencies toward internal, open-source infrastructure provides a scalable model for handling high-volume data while maintaining full control over storage and processing requirements.
