Software engineering currently functions more as a craft of tinkering than a rigorous discipline, raising the question of whether the term is an oxymoron. True engineering requires principled design, simulation, and fabrication, yet software development often ignores these standards, leading to fragile systems and catastrophic failures like the Boeing 737 MAX autopilot. The field suffers from a lack of systemic perspective, exacerbated by human cognitive biases such as the Dunning-Kruger effect and loss aversion. To mature, software development must adopt a CAD-SIM-FAB methodology—similar to electrical or mechanical engineering—and embrace a professional commitment to safety. By integrating scientific knowledge and moving beyond the "move fast and break things" mentality, the industry can transition from naive tinkering to a sophisticated, reliable practice that prioritizes human well-being and systemic stability.
