English Learning for Curious Minds | A More Interesting Way To Learn English

Operation Valkyrie represents one of history’s most significant turning points, centered on the July 20, 1944, attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler at the Wolf's Lair. Lieutenant Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg planted a briefcase bomb during a military briefing, but the explosion failed to kill Hitler because the device was moved behind a heavy table leg and the meeting took place in a ventilated, above-ground room rather than a concrete bunker. This failure doomed the subsequent coup, which relied on the false premise of Hitler’s death to mobilize the reserve army against the SS. The aftermath saw the execution of nearly 5,000 people, including many conspirators. Had the assassination succeeded, the war might have concluded in 1944, potentially sparing the six to eight million lives lost in the final months of the conflict.
