以为是 “当帽子掉下来的那个瞬间”，完全摸不透它在语境里的实际作用。

At the drop of a hat means to act quickly, without delay or much planning.

“At the drop of a hat”表示立即行动，不拖延或做过多计划。

“at the drop of a hat” 意思是 “立刻；马上；一有机会就”，

常用来形容人做事毫不迟疑、反应迅速，只要有触发的信号或机会，

就会立刻行动，比如有人一接到求助就赶来帮忙、一听到旅行邀约就收拾行李，

都能用它来形容。

那为什么有这样一层意思呢？

“at the drop of a hat” 的起源与 19 世纪的西方民俗相关，

当时人们常会用 “掉落帽子” 作为行动开始的信号，比如在决斗时，

裁判或双方约定以帽子落地为决斗启动的标志；

在赛马、赛跑等比赛中，也会用帽子掉落示意比赛开始。

后来这种 “以帽子掉落为信号，即刻行动” 的场景，
