#52: Elad Gil on What to Build in AI (Part II)

Podcast cover

More or Less Podcast

The current AI wave is characterized by a massive parallel search for product-market fit, where the vast majority of startups will fail, but the successful few will capture significant value. While enterprise adoption remains in its infancy, the most immediate opportunities lie in automating repetitive, high-payroll service sectors like legal, accounting, and healthcare. Unlike previous mobile-centric cycles that largely benefited incumbents, AI offers a fundamental technological shift that may allow new companies to displace existing workflows. Investors are increasingly exploring "AI buyouts," where acquiring established businesses to implement margin-expanding AI solutions proves more efficient than traditional software sales. Despite the current obsession with infrastructure, long-term value will likely reside in companies that own critical workflows and maintain high stickiness. As the industry matures, the focus must shift from engagement-optimized social media toward creating sustainable, value-driven AI applications that solve genuine labor shortages and operational inefficiencies.
