244: Gentle parenting doesn’t have to mean permissive parenting

Podcast cover

Your Parenting Mojo - Respectful, research-based parenting ideas to help kids thrive

Gentle and respectful parenting does not inherently equate to permissiveness, as the two concepts are distinct. The common "four parenting styles" framework, developed by Diana Baumrind, relies on a narrow, outdated study that conflates control with effective parenting and ignores the validity of harmonious approaches. True effectiveness arises from identifying and meeting the needs of both the parent and the child, rather than relying on power-over tools like logical consequences or limited choices, which often function as punishments. When children resist, they are frequently signaling unmet needs for connection or autonomy. By shifting focus from controlling behavior to understanding these underlying needs, parents can develop collaborative strategies—such as allowing a child to pour water to satisfy a need for autonomy—that foster cooperation without resorting to coercive tactics or sacrificing parental well-being.
