Lithium-ion batteries transformed modern technology by enabling high energy density in portable devices, yet their development was a decades-long journey of trial and error. Initially conceived by Stanley Whittingham during the 1970s energy crisis, the technology matured through John B. Goodenough’s cathode innovations and Akira Yoshino’s development of safer carbon-based anodes. These batteries function through the reversible intercalation of lithium ions between electrodes, a process stabilized by the formation of a protective Solid Electrolyte Interface. Despite their ubiquity, these systems remain inherently volatile; internal shorts caused by dendrite growth or mechanical damage can trigger catastrophic thermal runaway. As global demand for energy storage surges, the industry faces the dual challenge of scaling production while addressing the environmental costs of raw material extraction and the persistent safety risks inherent in current chemical architectures.
