The defeat of the Persians in 479 BCE fundamentally reshaped the Greek world, transitioning from a unified defense to a new era of power competition between Athens and Sparta. While the Greek League initially formed to resist invasion, the subsequent creation of the Delian League solidified Athens as a dominant naval hegemon. This alliance, initially voluntary, evolved into an Athenian empire as member states were compelled to provide monetary tribute rather than ships, and rebellions—such as that of Naxos—were forcefully suppressed. The resulting geopolitical landscape mirrored a "Cold War" dynamic, with Athens asserting independence through fortified walls and naval expansion, while Sparta retreated into a conservative, isolationist stance. This transformation established the framework for future conflicts, as the perceived necessity of the league shifted from collective security against Persia to the maintenance of Athenian imperial control.
