Adapting and Thriving in a Distributed World: Insights from Tom Kulzer, CEO of AWeber

In our latest episode of The Thoughtful Entrepreneur, we had the pleasure of hosting Tom Kulzer, CEO and founder of AWeber Communications. Tom shared invaluable insights on leading a distributed team, the evolution of email marketing, and how AWeber has positioned itself in a competitive SaaS landscape.

From College Startup to Industry Leader

Tom’s entrepreneurial journey began in college, where he created an automated follow-up email system to streamline his sales process. That simple idea evolved into AWeber, a pioneering email marketing platform. Over the past two decades, AWeber has grown into a trusted solution, known for its stellar customer support and commitment to helping small businesses succeed.

Navigating a Distributed Work Model

When the pandemic forced AWeber’s 150-member team to transition to remote work, Tom and his team quickly adapted. Within 48 hours, they equipped employees with necessary tools—monitors, office chairs, and more—to ensure a smooth transition. Their proactive approach highlights the importance of flexibility and preparation in uncertain times.

Email Marketing in 2023 and Beyond

Tom also emphasized the enduring power of email marketing. Engagement remains key—emails that invite interaction, provide value, and respect subscribers’ preferences are more likely to land in inboxes rather than spam folders. He recommended creating evergreen content and automating personalized email sequences to keep audiences engaged. For businesses looking to refine their strategies, Tom pointed to AWeber’s 8-step guide to email marketing during a crisis as an excellent resource. This guide offers actionable tips to ensure your messages resonate during challenging times.

The Secret Sauce: Customer Support

While many SaaS companies prioritize automation, AWeber stands out with its 24/7 customer support. Tom stressed that solving customer problems effectively—and with a human touch—remains a cornerstone of AWeber’s success. This conversation with Tom Kulzer is a masterclass in leadership, adaptability, and building lasting customer relationships. Whether you're navigating remote work, refining your email strategy, or looking to scale your business, Tom’s insights will resonate.
