The integration of machine learning and reinforcement learning into robotics faces a significant hurdle: the transition from controlled, lab-based environments to the unpredictable real world. While current robotics demonstrations often showcase impressive feats, these are typically highly tuned to specific setups and lack the robustness required for general-purpose tasks. Achieving true flexibility necessitates training on massive, diverse datasets, much like those used in large language models, rather than relying solely on simulation, which often fails to capture complex physical nuances. Meta-learning, or optimizing for the ability to learn, provides a promising framework for enabling robots to adapt to new environments through trial and error. As the field evolves, standardizing data collection and sharing resources across institutions will be essential to scaling these systems for practical, everyday applications in homes and offices.
