OceanOne and its successor, OceanOneK, represent a breakthrough in deep-sea robotics, functioning as human-controlled avatars capable of dexterous manipulation at depths reaching 1,000 meters. These robots utilize haptic feedback to provide operators with a sense of touch, enabling the safe handling of fragile archaeological artifacts and marine specimens. Key design innovations include oil-filled arms that equalize internal and external pressure and the use of hollow glass microspheres for buoyancy. While autonomous capabilities are increasing, human intervention remains critical for navigating unstructured environments and making complex cognitive decisions. Looking ahead, the integration of power autonomy and relay stations will facilitate extended, multi-robot missions, finally allowing humans to explore and interact with the deep ocean floor as effectively as they do on land.
