AI Awards and Events of the Day

1 - 2025 Turing Award

Andrew Barto and Richard Sutton, pioneers in reinforcement learning, have been awarded the 2025 A.M. Turing Award, often referred to as the "Nobel Prize of Computing," for their foundational contributions to artificial intelligence (AI). Their work, initiated in the late 1970s, has been instrumental in enabling machines to learn from experience, a concept that has become central to modern AI applications.

Reinforcement learning, the area they advanced, involves training AI systems to make decisions by rewarding desired behaviors, akin to how animals learn through rewards and punishments. This methodology has been pivotal in numerous AI milestones, including:

Google's AlphaGo defeating top human players in the game of Go.

The development of conversational AI models like ChatGPT.

Optimizing financial trading strategies.

Enhancing robotic problem-solving capabilities.

Despite initial skepticism and their research being considered "unfashionable," Barto and Sutton's perseverance led to breakthroughs that are now integral to AI technologies. Their work underscores the importance of machines learning from their own experiences, a principle that has reshaped various industries and research fields.

In light of their recognition, both scientists have expressed concerns about the rapid deployment of AI models without thorough testing. They caution against prioritizing business incentives over rigorous engineering practices, emphasizing the need for responsible development to mitigate potential negative consequences.

The Turing Award, named after British mathematician and early AI thinker Alan Turing, includes a $1 million prize and is sponsored by Google. This accolade highlights the profound impact of Barto and Sutton's work on the AI landscape, acknowledging their role in advancing technologies that continue to shape our world.

Turing Award Goes to 2 Pioneers of Artificial Intelligence

New York Times. March 5, 2025

In 1977, Andrew Barto, as a researcher at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, began exploring a new theory that neurons behaved like hedonists. The basic idea was that the human brain was driven by billions of nerve cells that were each trying to maximize pleasure and minimize pain.

A year later, he was joined by another young researcher, Richard Sutton. Together, they worked to explain human intelligence using this simple concept and applied it to artificial intelligence. The result was “reinforcement learning,” a way for A.I. systems to learn from the digital equivalent of pleasure and pain.

On Wednesday, the Association for Computing Machinery, the world’s largest society of computing professionals, announced that Dr. Barto and Dr. Sutton had won this year’s Turing Award for their work on reinforcement learning. The Turing Award, which was introduced in 1966, is often called the Nobel Prize of computing. The two scientists will share the $1 million prize that comes with the award.

Over the past decade, reinforcement learning has played a vital role in the rise of artificial intelligence, including breakthrough technologies such as Google’s AlphaGo and OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The techniques that powered these systems were rooted in the work of Dr. Barto and Dr. Sutton.

“They are the undisputed pioneers of reinforcement learning,” said Oren Etzioni, a professor emeritus of computer science at the University of Washington and founding chief executive of the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence. “They generated the key ideas — and they wrote the book on the subject.”

Their book, “Reinforcement Learning: An Introduction,” which was published in 1998, remains the definitive exploration of an idea that many experts say is only beginning to realize its potential.

Psychologists have long studied the ways that humans and animals learn from their experiences. In the 1940s, the pioneering British computer scientist Alan Turing suggested that machines could learn in much
