As of January 2024, the Architects Registration Board (ARB) mandates continuing professional development (CPD) as a condition for maintaining professional registration. Driven by the Building Safety Act, this requirement ensures architects maintain competence throughout their careers by focusing on learning outcomes rather than rigid input hours. Architects must self-reflect on their activities, which range from formal training to informal learning like self-directed reading or workplace feedback. While the ARB does not dictate specific training, it sets mandatory topics—currently fire and life safety and environmental sustainability—and subjects a percentage of records to annual audits. Professionals may record their activities on the ARB platform or use existing RIBA records to avoid duplication. Failure to comply or provide accurate records risks removal from the register, highlighting the necessity for consistent, reflective documentation of professional growth.
