Elon Musk in the News

1 - Elon Musk’s Diplomacy: Woo Right-Wing World Leaders. Then Benefit

Elon Musk has strategically cultivated relationships with right-wing leaders worldwide, aligning his political views with business interests to expand his enterprises. This approach has been evident in his interactions with leaders in Argentina, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Argentina

Following the election of Argentine President Javier Milei, Musk expressed optimism about the nation's future, stating on his platform X , "Prosperity is ahead for Argentina." Beyond public endorsements, Musk engaged directly with Milei regarding Argentina's lithium resources, a critical component for Tesla's electric vehicle batteries. Milei confirmed their discussions, noting Musk's significant interest in lithium. Subsequently, Milei advocated for policies favoring international lithium miners, potentially benefiting Tesla's supply chain.

Germany

In December 2024, Musk publicly endorsed Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany party, declaring it the only party capable of "saving" the country amid economic challenges. This endorsement followed Musk's earlier criticisms of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his interactions with German political figures. Musk's support for AfD, known for its nationalist and anti-immigration stance, has been controversial, especially given the party's exclusion from mainstream coalitions.

United Kingdom

Musk has shown interest in influencing UK politics by engaging with Nigel Farage, leader of the populist Reform UK party. Reports suggest Musk is considering a substantial financial contribution to Reform UK, aiming to bolster its position against the current Labour government. Such involvement has prompted discussions about potential changes to UK laws regarding foreign political donations.

United States

In the U.S., Musk has leveraged his influence within the Republican Party, particularly during debates over government spending. His public opposition to a bipartisan budget proposal, expressed through his platform X, contributed to the proposal's collapse, demonstrating his sway over legislative processes. Musk's close relationship with former President Donald Trump has further solidified his role in American politics, with Trump appointing him to lead a newly established Department of Government Efficiency.

Musk's strategy of aligning with right-wing leaders serves to advance his business interests and political influence, positioning him as a significant figure in global political and economic arenas.

2 - This Was the Year Elon Musk Took Over Politics

By Vittoria Elliott. Wired. Dec 23, 2024.

The American public elected Donald Trump to run the federal government. His erratic patron seems to think the job is also his.

Donald Trump may be the next president, but the person who defined the 2024 election was never even a candidate. Centibillionaire Elon Musk all but shut down the US government via X post before Trump, behind whom Musk threw his full support, was even in office. How the political system can adapt to such a figure is unclear.

What is clear is that Musk’s particular blend of superwealth, celebrity, and influence in the world of the Silicon Valley has already made him a key player in shaping the incoming second Trump administration and that his use of X to support Trump’s bid for leadership of the free world is a key component of his power.

“I think Musk is very similar to Trump,” says João Vieira Magalhaes, assistant professor of media, politics, and democracy at the University of Groningen. “He really turned Twitter into a political tool.”

Over the course of the campaign, Musk became one of Trump’s most significant supporters. After endorsing Trump following the assassination attempt against him in Butler, Pennsylvania, Musk pledged to donate $45 million a month to America PAC, a pro-Trump political action committee. By the election, America PAC had shelled out nearly $200 million
