#47 - Too Much Sleep

Podcast cover

The Matt Walker Podcast

Optimal sleep duration for healthy young adults often exceeds self-perceived needs, revealing a pervasive, hidden sleep debt. Controlled laboratory studies demonstrate that when individuals are removed from modern lifestyle constraints—such as artificial light, caffeine, and rigid work schedules—they naturally gravitate toward 8.6 to 8.75 hours of sleep per night. This increased duration significantly enhances neurocognitive functioning, reaction times, and metabolic markers, including blood sugar regulation and stress hormone levels. While these findings challenge the notion of "too much sleep" within physiological limits, they remain specific to young populations. Beyond these bounds, sleep functions similarly to other essential biological requirements like food and water, where extreme, non-physiological excess may eventually prove detrimental, though most modern individuals face a significant deficit rather than an overabundance of rest.
