Nuclear fusion offers a clean, cost-effective, and virtually inexhaustible energy solution capable of replacing fossil fuels. Despite the technical challenge of achieving the required 150 million degrees Celsius, progress in magnetic and laser confinement has been significant. Michel Laberge, founder of General Fusion, advocates for a practical approach called Magnetized Target Fusion. This method uses steam-driven pistons to compress plasma within a spinning liquid metal vortex, effectively addressing the issues of neutron damage and heat extraction found in traditional tokamak designs. By leveraging modern electronics and cost-effective mechanical systems, fusion is transitioning from theoretical physics toward viable, scalable power generation for the global energy market.
