The global economy functions through a massive, systematic net transfer of value from the Global South to the Global North, perpetuating underdevelopment in the periphery to fuel consumption and capital accumulation in the core. Research by Jason Hickel, a professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, reveals that rich nations annually appropriate billions of tons of raw materials, exajoules of energy, and hundreds of billions of labor hours from the South. This unequal exchange persists through structural price inequalities and modern imperialist mechanisms, effectively siphoning resources that could otherwise support universal public services and poverty reduction. Because high-consumption growth in the core depends on this appropriation, solving the climate crisis necessitates a post-growth, eco-socialist transition. This shift requires democratizing productive capacities to prioritize human well-being and ecological stability over the profit-driven imperatives of global capital.
