Tokyo Rose: World War II’s most controversial radio DJ

Iva Toguri, an American citizen of Japanese descent, became the target of a national treason investigation after being trapped in Japan during World War II. Coerced into working for Radio Tokyo, she served as an announcer for "The Zero Hour," a program intended to demoralize Allied troops. Although "Tokyo Rose" was a collective nickname invented by American soldiers for various female radio hosts, Iva was singled out as the sole traitor. Despite testimony from her producer confirming her broadcasts were harmless, she was convicted of treason based on perjured evidence and intense media-fueled public hostility. After serving six years in prison and enduring decades of legal battles and government-sanctioned harassment, Iva received a full presidential pardon in 1977, finally clearing her name and restoring her reputation as a loyal American.
