The Death of NBC's Saturday Night

NBC transformed Saturday nights from a ratings "graveyard" into a powerhouse of comedy by leveraging the unexpected success of *The Golden Girls*. Premiering in 1985, the show defied industry norms by featuring a cast of women over 50, attracting a broad audience that included younger viewers. Under executive Brandon Tartikoff, the network built a lucrative two-hour block of sitcoms, utilizing crossover events and synergy to maintain high ratings. However, as the 1990s approached, shifting network priorities toward younger 18-34 demographics and the rise of "Must See TV" on other nights caused the Saturday block to lose its footing. Despite attempts to modernize the lineup with younger-skewing shows, the strategy failed, leading to the eventual cancellation of the block and the return of Saturday to a low-priority slot for broadcast television.
