Repo markets serve as the central nervous system of global finance, providing essential short-term liquidity and balance sheet management. Bringing these mechanisms on-chain addresses structural inefficiencies, such as the inability to rapidly redistribute capital during market stress, as evidenced by the 2019 repo crisis. Current on-chain credit infrastructure, including tokenized assets and automated lending protocols, offers a pathway to solve liquidity bottlenecks for Real World Assets (RWAs) and stablecoin management. While on-chain solutions provide agility and composability, they must overcome significant hurdles in standardization, legal enforceability, and the establishment of a robust, lender-of-last-resort mechanism. Hybrid models blending traditional financial rails with decentralized protocols are currently emerging as the most viable approach to scaling these markets, potentially reaching trillions in volume as institutional adoption matures over the next five years.
