Token maxxing—the practice of incentivizing employees to maximize AI token consumption—serves as a critical, albeit controversial, mechanism for navigating the transition from assisted to agentic AI. While critics dismiss the practice as a form of "conspicuous consumption" or a way to game performance metrics, these arguments often overlook the necessity of experimentation in a new technological paradigm. Because there are no established best practices for managing agents, high token usage functions as a form of organizational R&D. Although some employees may inflate usage scores through non-essential tasks, the long-term competitive advantage lies with companies that foster a culture of trial and error. Rather than viewing token consumption as a simple cost, organizations should treat it as an essential investment in identifying new workflows and building the internal expertise required to thrive in an agent-driven economy.
