The Theory of Constraints, originally developed by physicist Eliyahu Goldratt in his business novel *The Goal*, posits that every system is limited by a single bottleneck. Focusing energy on this specific constraint—rather than optimizing non-essential steps—is the key to improving overall system performance. In knowledge work, digital tools often create the illusion of productivity by speeding up non-bottleneck tasks, leading to increased busyness without actual output gains. Applying this theory requires identifying the true limiting factor, such as time or cognitive focus, and implementing rules like "stop starting, start finishing" to prevent multitasking. By prioritizing the bottleneck, individuals and teams can achieve greater results with less effort, shifting from a frantic, tool-heavy workflow to a more disciplined, effective process that targets the actual constraints of their work.
