Catherine King and Wayne Adams have lived in a self-built, floating complex known as Freedom Cove off the coast of Vancouver Island since 1992. Driven by a desire for independence and a rejection of urban noise, the couple constructed their home—a magenta-painted, 500-ton structure consisting of 41 interconnected platforms—entirely by hand without blueprints. They achieve near-total self-sufficiency by cultivating thousands of plants in four greenhouses and harvesting seafood directly from the ocean, even fishing through a glass floor in their living room. Beyond the physical labor of maintaining their off-grid existence, the couple emphasizes the spiritual and personal fulfillment found in their isolation. Their lifestyle serves as a practical demonstration of intentional living, proving that it is possible to thrive outside conventional societal structures by prioritizing personal agency and a direct, non-intrusive connection with nature.
