Food security in the UK is increasingly fragile, with the nation importing approximately 40% of its food supply. Global ecosystem degradation, geopolitical conflicts, and climate change present a "worst-case scenario" where national security is threatened by potential food shortages. Agriculture itself contributes nearly a third of global greenhouse gas emissions, primarily through livestock like cattle and sheep which produce significant methane. Transitioning toward a sustainable model requires shifting land use from animal farming to non-animal protein sources, such as beans, lentils, and fruit crops. By diversifying production and reducing reliance on imports—particularly from the Netherlands, the UK's largest food provider—farmers can transition from being contributors to environmental issues to becoming active participants in climate solutions. This shift in agricultural strategy is a critical piece of the puzzle in ensuring a reliable supply of affordable, healthy food for the population.
