The Artemis II mission's final stage centers on safely recovering the astronauts and their spacecraft, Orion, after their lunar voyage. Lili Villarreal, NASA’s Landing and Recovery Director for Artemis II, details the complex recovery operation involving Navy ships, divers, and helicopters, all coordinated to ensure astronaut safety. Key challenges include managing debris from parachute deployment, assessing hazardous materials around the spacecraft, and ensuring the hatch opens correctly for astronaut egress. Contingency plans, known as Recovery Decision Criterias (RDCs), are developed and tested for various scenarios, such as parachute failures or GPS loss. The recovery team uses a Crew Module Test Article (CMTA), nicknamed Vader, to simulate real-world conditions during Underway Recovery Tests with the military.
