Doreen Orishaba, Managing Director of Basigo Rwanda, discusses the company's efforts to provide cost-effective electric buses as an alternative to diesel buses in Africa. Orishaba highlights that electricity in Kenya and Rwanda is cheaper, cleaner, and more stable due to local renewable generation. Basigo designs buses for local needs, piloting small fleets to optimize battery capacities and suspension systems based on real-life route data. The company also builds charging infrastructure and provides service centers to minimize downtime. Through a pay-as-you-drive lease model, Basigo enables operators to scale without heavy initial investment, mitigating up to 50 tons of CO2 annually per bus.
