Magnetic tape recording fundamentally altered the nature of reality and identity by enabling the seamless manipulation of sound. Bing Crosby’s quest for personal freedom led to the adoption of the German magnetophone, a technology that allowed radio shows to be pre-recorded and edited for the first time. Audio engineer Jack Mullen, who brought the technology to the United States, initially championed its high-fidelity capture of reality, yet eventually grew disillusioned as producers used it to manufacture artificial experiences, such as inserting canned laughter into performances. This capability to splice and edit audio created a "pseudo-reality" where the distinction between authentic and fabricated moments vanished.
