On this episode of The Black Wine Guy Experience, my guest is Count Michael Goëss-Enzberg, caretaker of the historic Manincor Estate in Caldaro, Alto Adige.

The historical buildings date back to 1608. They were built by Hieronymus Manincor. For his loyalty to the Crown of Austria, the Emperor elevated him to nobility status and bestowed him with land on the shores of Lake Kaltern.

Hieronymus adapted his family’s coat-of-arms to symbolize “Man-in-cor” (meaning “Hand on the heart”). It can still be seen on the facade of the winery building today. In 1662 his granddaughter married an ancestor of Count Enzenberg. The Enzenberg family has been growing wine grapes since the end of the 17th century. Historical documents refer to Enzenberg wine cellars in Terlano, Caldaro, and Schwaz in what is now North Tyrol. In 1978 the estate finally passed to Count Enzenberg.

We hear about Count Michael’s journey from California to Terlano and how he adopted biodynamic principles to ensure a natural approach to winemaking. We learn about the unique challenges and beauty of growing wine in the region, with its wide variety of grapes and the wide range of altitudes where wine is grown. We also delve into the importance of service in the wine industry and how it can make all the difference in creating memorable experiences for customers.
