Black Friday 2024 achieved record-breaking growth with Shopify reporting $6.2 billion in sales, a 25% increase over the previous year. Harley Finkelstein, President of Shopify, highlights a shift in consumer behavior toward "home-centric" purchases, such as kitchenware and puzzles, moving away from last year’s focus on outdoor gear. Despite economic uncertainty and potential tariff headwinds, cross-border commerce remains robust, accounting for 17% of total orders. The integration of AI is fundamentally changing the retail landscape; AI-driven traffic to Shopify stores has increased sixfold since January, and merchants are increasingly utilizing "agentic" commerce tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity to facilitate seamless, link-free transactions. Additionally, smaller merchants are leveraging AI assistants like Sidekick to manage design, copywriting, and analytics, effectively narrowing the competitive gap with larger retailers while maintaining high sales volumes of approximately $2.5 million per minute during peak periods.
