Refilwe Ledwaba, the first black woman in South Africa to fly helicopters and founder of Girls Fly Africa, shares how proactive mentorship changed her life and how she applies it to her own teaching. Ledwaba recounts facing challenges during helicopter training due to a lack of early motor skill development. Her instructor redesigned the training program to accommodate her background, enabling her to excel. Inspired by this experience, Ledwaba founded Girls Fly Africa, which addresses challenges faced by young women from rural areas aspiring to become pilots. The organization focuses on providing information, building skills through simulators and 3D models, offering scholarships, creating networks for job prospects, and providing continuous support for career advancement.
