Mindfulness meditation serves as a rigorous investigation into the nature of consciousness, shifting the practitioner's perspective from being a "thinker" of thoughts to being the prior space in which all experiences arise. By focusing on the raw sensations of breathing, bodily pressure, and ambient sound, it becomes evident that there is no experiential distinction between "inside" and "outside" the mind. Thoughts, emotions, and even the visual field are merely transient perturbations within a single sphere of awareness. The common illusion of being identical to one's moods—such as sadness or anxiety—dissolves when consciousness is recognized as a mirror that remains unchanged by the images it reflects. Ultimately, the self that feels like a permanent center of experience is revealed to be another arising appearance, as thoughts like the memory of a name or a visual image of a candle emerge and vanish without a central author.
