The year is 1982. The place? The Boston Marathon, where a gutsy, relatively unknown underdog took on the renowned champion Alberto Salazar. They ran so closely together the final 9 miles that they’d monitor one another by watching the other’s shadow on the steaming hot asphalt. The race represented not only one of the most exciting marathons in Boston history, but also a climax to each man’s career. The depths to which each had to go in the final miles took such a toll that neither ever ran as well again.
