Last week, Indonesia was rocked by large-scale protests after the parliament moved to increase lawmakers’ housing allowances, stoking anger in a nation grappling with rising costs of living and economic hardship. Demonstrators, including students, labor unions, and motorcycle taxi drivers, rallied in Jakarta and cities nationwide, demanding fairer wages, lower taxes, and institutional reforms.

Tensions soared when 21-year-old delivery driver Affan Kurniawan was tragically killed by a police armored vehicle during a crowd dispersal in Jakarta, intensifying the unrest.
