This afternoon's session will explore the Abhidharma, a concept that emerges from Buddhist Nikayas. We'll look into its main objectives and defining characteristics. The Abhidharma utilizes three key approaches: the ontology of basic elements of existence known as Dhamma Theory, a master list of qualities called the attribute matika, and a thorough classification of consciousness. It differentiates between ultimate reality—Dhammas, which represent the basic building blocks of experience—and conventional realities, like people and objects. This distinction helps clarify the roots of suffering and offers strategies for achieving liberation. By systematically analyzing our experiences, the Abhidharma reveals how various terms in the Suttas point to a limited set of fundamental elements, providing a valuable framework for understanding and overcoming suffering.
