In July 1899, Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst faced significant financial deficits following the conclusion of the Spanish-American War. To recover losses, both media moguls unilaterally increased the wholesale price of their newspapers from 50 to 60 cents per hundred copies, effectively passing the burden onto the "Newsies"—the young, impoverished street vendors who relied on the papers for their livelihood. This decision triggered a massive, organized strike led by figures like Kid Blink, which crippled circulation for both empires. Despite initial attempts to break the strike through police intervention and the recruitment of alternative labor, the Newsies’ persistence forced both publishers to roll back prices and agree to refund unsold inventory. This victory marked a rare moment of collective power for the young workforce, though the eventual rise of permanent newsstands and automobiles eventually rendered the Newsie profession obsolete.
